Rosie’s Story

Published 02/07/2020

Myself and my partner both came down with a nasty virus attack in early Feb, my partner was affected first and myself a day later. We both have Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn’s Disease & Ulcerative Colitis) the Diarrhoea and vomiting were on us in a flash. In all our years of having an IBD with all it’s unpleasant symptoms we have never had anything affect us with such speed and severity.

Within a few hours we both had zero energy and could barely move. Extremely bad diarrhoea and vomiting plus a fever, for a short while my partner who had a worse fever than me was delirious, he also had quite severe gut pain. I was left with sinus headaches for weeks afterwards and still get them now along with eye pain as if I have conjunctivitis. I also have severe joint pain in all joints and crippling fatigue and terrible brain fog.

Over the last fortnight I have had trouble with my memory and have struggled to continue with my work. My breathing does not feel quite right although I have not really had a cough or a sore throat. It has been so debilitating. My partner had another flare-up of Ulcerative Colitis brought on by whatever we had for which he needed a course of steroids to try to get it under control.

We have not been tested for Covid 19 but as early cases in Wuhan reported gut problems, severe diarrhoea and vomiting we are suspecting we may have had it. My IBD consultant had a telephone consultation with me this week and he also suspects from what I told him that we may well have been infected. We are both still struggling and the fatigue in particular is an ongoing problem. We both feel totally wiped out every single day – it feels like we have the flu.

If this was Covid 19 I’m glad we’ve had it and I would not wish it on my worst enemy. It was so sudden and severe it was terrifying…
